Maharashtra's Public Health Department has initiated a Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccination campaign targeting children aged 1 to 15 years. This campaign commenced on March 1, 2025, in the districts of Pune, Raigad, and Parbhani, including the municipal corporations of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Panvel.
The initiative aims to vaccinate approximately 5 million children against JE, a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites that can lead to severe neurological complications. The vaccination strategy involves a one-time mass immunization campaign, after which the JE vaccine will be incorporated into the Routine Immunization (RI) schedule. In this schedule, the first dose is administered between 9 to 12 months of age, and the second dose between 16 to 24 months.
In Pune city, an estimated 1.1 million children are eligible for vaccination. Health officials have confirmed that necessary preparations, including staff training and cold storage facilities, have been completed to ensure the campaign's success.
This vaccination drive is part of a nationwide program to combat JE, which remains the leading viral cause of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Asia. The campaign underscores the state's commitment to safeguarding children's health and preventing the spread of this life-threatening disea
